Episode 1: Why do our kids misbehave?

In the first episode of the ParentWhys podcast, the mother-daughter hosts Dr. B and Carrie Jordan introduce listeners to the concept behind the project.  They intend to use the podcast to help parents; more specifically, they want to explore reasons why children misbehave so that they can then determine how best to help the children.  After the first couple of introductory episodes, the podcast will consist of interviews with parents who are facing difficulties with their children, advice from the hosts for these struggling parents, and a look back to previously helped families to observe results.

Before moving into regular content, though, Dr. B and Carrie introduce listeners to themselves.  Dr. B has been a therapist for several decades, and both she and her daughter have extensive experience with children.  Among Carrie’s relevant experiences are both her childhood under Dr. B’s parenting techniques and her own current parenting of two young children.  Both hosts are passionate about the work of parenting, and about the theory that undergirds approaches to it.

After introducing themselves, the hosts discuss foundational ideas behind their parenting theory and techniques.  They note first several facts of parenting: it is a soft science, it involves efforts to teach resilience, and it is grounded in logic.  Because of this grounding in logic, parents are right to frequently ask the question, “Why?”  They must understand their children’s behavior in order to correct it.  And, Dr. B clarifies, there are four general goals motivating children’s misbehavior: attention-getting, power, revenge, and display of inadequacy.  These four goals correspond to goals of positive behavior, which indicate the direction in which parents should redirect negative behavior.

These points of theory and practice will drive advice given in later episodes, and are the initial ideas that the hosts hope to compile with many others into an archive of resources for the ParentWhys community.
